Adams, Richard
Richard Adams wrote his first and most famous book, Watership Down, at the age of 48 whilst working as a Civil Servant. It started as a story he told his two daughters on a car journey. Published after several rejections in 1972 it became both enormously popular and critically acclaimed, winning its author both the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Prize. Adams wrote several other notable novels including Shardik (1974) and the Plague Dogs (1977). Adams also served as President of the RSPCA for 1982.
