A set of four juvenile adventure novels, three of which are from Scottish author R. M. Ballantyne and one from English novelist and journalist, George Manville Fenn. 

Both writers wrote with young adults in mind, creating adventures likened to that of Robert Louis Stevenson. Ballantyne is particularly noted for his attention to real-life research and detail after a geography-related mistake he made in The Coral Island.

In the original decorative cloth bindings. 

All volumes are undated. Dated via copies held institutionally. 

Including the following titles: 

'The Madman and the Pirate' by R. M. Ballantyne (1883) - Twenty-third thousand edition. With seven illustrated plates. Thirty-two pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. Collated, complete. 

'Life in the Red Brigade' by R. M. Ballantyne (1887) - No edition remarks. Eight pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. 

'The Crystal Hunters: A Boy's Adventure in the Higher Alps' by George Manville Fenn (1892) - Ninth thousand edition. Thirty-two pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear. 

'Away in the Wilderness: Life Among the Red Indians and Fur-Traders of North America' by R. M. Ballantyne (1912) - No edition remarks. With six pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear.

Condition

In the original decorative cloth bindings. Externally, 'Crystal' and 'Wilderness' are very smart, with only light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. 'Madman' and 'Brigade' have slightly more notable wear, with fading to the cloth. Damp stains to the boards of 'Brigade'. Prize bookplates to the front pastedowns of 'Crystal' and 'Madman'. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean. with offsetting to the endpapers. Contemporary ink inscription to 'Wilderness' front free endpaper and a few scattered spots to 'Wilderness' and 'Madman'.
