'The Chinese Empire' is a comprehensive study on the religion, laws, usages, and institutions of China. Huc details the three traditional religions of China: Daoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism, as well as offering a sketches of Chinese culture and his experiences working as a missionary across the country.

Evariste Regis Huc was a Catholic priest, who is remembered for his account of what was then the almost unknown country of Tibet, and for being the first European to reach Lhasa since Thomas Manning in 1812.

Bound in full calf, with the boards rebacked and the spine laid down to volume I. Half titles retained, with both volumes bound without the publisher's ads. Externally, sound, with rubbing to the extremities and joints. Partial loss and chipping to spine labels. Marks to boards of volume II. Hinges reinforced to volume I, and strained to volume II. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with a few spots to the end pages. Inscription to front blank of volume I. Light chipping to folding map with a large closed tear to central fold.
