Algernon Charles Swinburne’s 1870 celebratory ode commemorates the declaration of the French Third Republic after the collapse of the Second Empire following the Battle of Sedan. The ode is a celebration of republicanism and revolutionary change, with Swinburne's original dedication to Victor Hugo. 

Algernon Charles Swinburne was an English lyric poet, playwright, novelist, and critic. He made major contributions to the Pre-Raphaelite movement in poetry.

Condition

First edition in the publisher's original paper wraps. Externally, generally smart with the odd handling mark to the front and rear wraps and damp staining along the spine. Contemporary ink inscription to top right corner of cover. Front hinge strained. Internally, binding strained throughout. Front free endpaper torn. Pages bright and clean with the odd spot only to the last few pages.
