What Our Customers Say...
Description
Very Scarce
An extremely scarce late Seventeenth Century set of books of the works of St. Jerome. In Latin. The first three of a five volume set, and was completed in 1706. With decorative head and tail pieces, one full page plate and a folding map. The volumes include Latin translations of The Old and New Testaments, from Hebrew, and are reproductions of some antiquity manuscripts from the Vatican. Also included are commentaries and criticisms of the Bible and other sets of writings from St. Jerome. A very interesting set of religious texts.
Condition
In cloth binding. Externally the books, in keeping with their age, are very worn, with loss, wear, marking and rubbing to the boards, extremities, backstrip and joints. There are also sections of the backstrips which are starting. Internally, the pages are generally firmly bound, although there is some areas where the binding is tender. The pages show significant evidence of worming, although are generally bright and clean, aside from instances of spotting, handling marks and creasing. There is also some foxing to the endpages, which are torn in places and have been adhered to the pastedown by a previous owner. There are also bookplates loosely adhered to the endpages and library stamps to title pages.
