    Description

    First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

    First edition of Lectures on Architecture and Painting Delivered at Edinburgh in November 1853, with illustrations by the author. 

    Featuring fifteen monochrome plates and folding frontispiece all drawn by Ruskin. Collated, complete. 

    In the publisher's original brown cloth binding with gilt lettering on the spine, with a bookplate by Charles Morris. A pencil inscription on the front free endpaper also indicates past ownership by fellow art historian, Clive Wainwright. Contains sixteen pages of original publisher's advertisements to the rear of the work. 

    John Ruskin was an English writer and polymath of the Victorian era. This collection focuses on the principles of architecture and painting as delivered in his lectures in Edinburgh in 1853.

    Condition

    In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart. Bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities and marks to the boards. Light wear to the cloth on the spine. Front hinge strained. Internally, binding is strained. Pages mostly bright and clean with marginal age toning and the odd spot, heavier to the first and last few pages.
