Written by Major Whitworth Porter, an English Major-General of the Royal Engineers, also known for his historical writings.
Founded in Jerusalem in the 1070s, the Order of the Hospital of St. John, or The Knights of Malta was created as a hospice for pilgrims. During the Crusades its role became more political and military, becoming very influential in Europe. The Order of Malta is one of the few orders of its kind that is still active today.
The first volume covers Palestine to Rhodes and the origin of chivalry, while the second volume focuses on Malta.
Condition
Bound by Bickers in full calf. Externally, very smart, with light rubbing to the joints and extremities, and the odd mark. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with a few spots to the first and last few pages, and offsetting to title page. Ink inscription to front blank.
