This is the second novel by Rosamond Lehmann, which is based upon the author's own marriage to the painter Wogan Phillips. The work follows a married couple named Hugh and Clare who visit an industrial town in North England and 'all but destroy the wedded happiness of these poor provincials'.
Rosamond Lehmann (1901-1990) was an English novelist and translator, particularly known for 'Dusty Answer', which was referred to as a 'succes de scandale'. The work boosted her career into the intimate lives of the Bloomsbury Group.

Condition
Bound in the publisher's cloth with the original, unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, excellent, with a little bumping to the spine and extremities. The odd mark to cloth, mainly to the rear board. Bookseller label to the rear paste down. Spots to fore edge. Dust wrapper is very good, with light edge wear and chipping, with the odd closed tear. Sunning to the spine of the wrap and the occasional mark. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally clean and bright, with scattered spotting, predominantly to the first few pages.
