The first edition, first impression.
Published in late 1893 with the 1894 date, as is called for.
The first issue, with the Strand Library illustration to the front board, bearing the 'Southampton Street' sign, as called for.
Arthur Conan Doyle's second collection of stories to feature his world-famous consulting detective, Sherlock Holmes, following on from 'The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes', published in 1892.
Comprised of twelve stories, originally published in The Strand Magazine between 1892-3.
Conan Doyle intended this collection to be his final work to contain the famed Holmes character, culminating in his death at Reichenbach Falls in "The Final Problem". However, public demand encouraged him to continue with the series, with his following collection opening with the miraculous survival of Holmes in his dramatic return.
Illustrated with a frontispiece depicting Holmes's fall from the Reichenbach waterfall, and numerous further vignette illustrations, all the work of Sidney Paget.
The volume consists of eleven stories: "The Adventure of Silver Blaze"; "The Adventure of the Yellow Face"; "The Adventure of the Stockbroker's Clerk"; "The Adventure of the Gloria Scott"; "The Adventure of the Musgrave Ritual"; "The Adventure of the Reigate Squire"; "The Adventure of the Crooked Man"; "The Adventure of the Resident Patient"; "The Adventure of the Greek Interpreter"; "The Adventure of the Naval Treaty" and "The Final Problem".
