Description

First Edition, Leather Binding, Scarce

First edition.

Illustrated with a frontispiece.

Bound in full calf.

The naval memoirs of James II, then the Duke of York, from the years 1660 to 1673. James commanded the Royal Navy during the Second and Third Anglo-Dutch War, during which he captures forts off the African coast, which helped to facilitate English involvement in the slave trade.

This memoir was compiled from James' original letters, as well as those by other authorities of the day. James II became King after the death of his older brother, Charles II, in 1685. His reign was short lived, however, as he was deposed in the 1688 Glorious Revolution.

An important work, it is generally thought to be edited by Samuel Pepys.
