Through the Rooke-ing Glass No. 28

Amongst some of our recently acquired treasures are countless works by Agatha Christie, as well as first editions of Jules Verne's 'Voyages Extraordinaires' and gardening works by Vita Sackville-West. All of which anyone would delight to find underneath their Christmas tree! And now for our more unusual works...

Des Odeurs des Parfums et des Cosmetiques

A fascinating French work relating to scents and perfumes, by one of the most important perfumers in history. An innovator, George Septimus Piesse co-owned 'Piesse and Lubin', a luxury nineteenth century perfume shop. Two bottles of Piesse and Lubin perfume were found near a shipwreck in Bermuda in 2011; the scents still in perfect condition, a local perfumery reproduced the scent. Our copy of this work, in the original French, is in a beautiful handmade binding, with the original paper wraps preserved and bound within.

The Money Game

We delighted at this book-game hybrid. Created by Norman Angel with the intention of using it to educate children and young people on finance and economics, half of the book is an essay and the rear portion is a game, with paper bank notes and cards. Angel later won the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in international relations. This work pre-dates Monopoly, and is a delightful economic work, far more entertaining than most financial works!

Great Magician's Tricks

Written by stage magician Will Goldston, the author of extensive works on magic, card tricks and illusions, this work explores modern magicians as well as the magicians of old, covering the tricks of such people including Houdini and Max Houlden. Interestingly, Goldston was one of few magicians who converted to spiritualism, although he did believe that many mediums were fraudulent and used similar tricks as he did with their clients. Our copy is an excellent insight into the world of magicians, richly illustrated throughout.

Our other magic-related works can be found here.

The Art of Invigorating and Prolonging Life

And finally, a charming little self-help work, this was the brainchild of William Kitchener, a true jack-of-all-trades. Kitchiner was an optician, musician, celebrity chef and the inventor of the potato crisp and Wow-Wow sauce. This is a very scarce, slightly healthier work, focusing on how to keep the mind and body healthy. It contains chapters on food, clothes, air, exercise, wine and sleep, although no crisp recipes in this work. He was renowned for cooking all the food he wrote about himself, as well as always washing up afterwards, a rare thing for contemporary food writers. Our other works relating to food and drink can be found here.

Our header this week is from a five-volume fourth edition of Fanny Burney's 'Cecelia'.

Finally, Merry Christmas from all at Rooke Books!
