Arising from the Devotio Moderna movement in the late fourteenth century, the Imitation of Christ is intended as a handbook for spiritual life, and is thought to be one of the most widely read Christian work after the bible.

This work was originally written anonymously, first published around the 14th or 15th century. It is often attribute to Thomas A. Kempis, a Dutch monk from the Middle Ages.

Translated by French catholic priest, philosopher and political theorist, Félicité Robert de La Mennais, or Lamennais, who is now recognised as one of the most influential thinkers of Restoration France.

Illustrated with a frontispiece.

Condition

Bound in full calf with intricate gilt detailing. Externally, very good, with slight rubbing to the rear board causing loss to gilt. Small worming marks to rear board. Internally, firmly bound with bright, clean pages.
