The first UK edition.
Published the same year as the US edition, although published in one volume instead of two.
Bound in half calf with marbled paper covered boards.
This compelling novel tells the story of the white family and black slaves who coexist on a large plantation in the southern United States. Included among these characters is Dred, an escaped slave living in the Great Dismal Swamp nearby, who preaches of angry retribution against slavery.
Written by American author, Harriet Beecher Stowe, whose first novel was the noted' Uncle Tom's Cabin'. In response to the backlash received from abolitionists and African Americans criticising the endorsement of colonisation as the solution to slavery, Beecher Stowe included the extremely revolutionary character of Dred in this novel.
With a preface, not included in the US edition.
Bound without the publisher's advertisements.
Condition
