This text compiles all 81 artworks of London street criers present in the library of leading 17th-century writer Samuel Pepys. During his lifetime Pepys was an avid collector, his private library housing over 3000 books at the time of his death. The images in this volume relate to the famous "cryes" of London's street traders through the ages. Originating in early 15th-century France, the "cryes", or illustrated vendors, were prolifically printed throughout Europe, their popularity lasting up until the twentieth century.
