Written by Captain Charles Bruce Bairnsfather, a prominent British humorist and cartoonist best-known for the cartoon character Old Bill who appeared in the series Fragments from France. Bairnsfather emerged as one of the most popular cartoonists of the First World War. Old Bill was a “Brit” that people back home could relate to and who displayed a calm, slightly humorous detachment from the mundane and dangerous life of soldiering. Bairnsfather intended his drawings to be a humorous take on the “ingloriousness of war, its preposterous absurdity, and of its futility as a means of settling the affairs of nations”. This set contains the third edition of Fragments from France, and More Fragments from France, the second volume of Bairnsfather's work. Published in The Bystander, a British weekly tabloid magazine including reviews, topical drawings, cartoons and short stories.
