What Our Customers Say...

Description

Original Binding, Rebound, Very Scarce

Rebound in original quarter cloth and paper binding.

Jacques Rosenthal was a prominent German-Jewish antiquarian bookseller and art dealer, renowned for his extensive catalogues of rare books and manuscripts. His catalogues from the late 19th century and early 20th century often feature detailed descriptions of the items, including provenance, price, and physical condition.

Rosenthal's catalogue serves as a valuable resource for understanding the availability and variety of such editions.

The Imitation is perhaps the most widely read Christian devotional work after the Bible, and is regarded as a devotional and religious classic. The book was written anonymously in Latin in the Netherlands. Its popularity was immediate, and after the first printed edition in 1471–1472, it was printed in 745 editions before 1650. Aside from the Bible, no book had been translated into more languages than the Imitation of Christ at the time.

Condition

In quarter cloth binding, with paper covered boards. Externally, a little worn with damp staining, handling marks, and shelf wear to boards. A little worn to backstrip with closed tears and loss to spine. Bookplate from the General theological Seminary Library, New York, to paste down. Library annotations to front board. Internally, first four leaves and last two have become loose. Internal catalogues are firmly bound. Generally bright and clean, with typical age toning and the odd handling mark.
