A retelling of The Water-Babies, a children's novel which follows a young chimney sweep who falls into a river after encountering an upper-class girl named Ellie and being chased out of her house. There he appears to drown and is transformed into a "water-baby". Originally written by Charles Kingsley, a broad church priest of the Church of England, a university professor, social reformer, historian, novelist and poet. Retold by Amy Steedman, a distinguished English author, renowned for her contributions to children's literature in the early twentieth century. Edited by Louey Chisholm, a British children's author. Illustrated by Katharine Cameron, a Scottish artist, watercolourist, and printmaker.
Condition
In the original green cloth binding with pictorial plate. Externally, smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Light fading to the spine with the odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd spot or handling mark. Age toning to the endpapers. Contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper.
