Six volumes of a seventeen volume set. The Oxford Thackeray with illustrations. A collection of the works of William Makepeace Thackeray, a renowned British author and illustrator, best known for his satirical works, particularly his 1848 novel Vanity Fair. Each volume is edited and introduced by George Saintsbury, an English critic, literary historian, editor, teacher, and wine connoisseur, regarded as a highly influential critic of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. This set contains: The Irish Sketch Book and Contributions to the 'Foreign Quarterly Review', 1842-4. With forty-five illustrations. An intimate portrait of Ireland written in the 1840's prior to the Famine, marked by it's hostility to Irish Catholics, the book appealed to British prejudices. Being one of two travel books written by Thackeray. The Adventures of Philip On His Way Through the World. With sixty-three illustrations. The last novel Thackeray completed, this work harks back to several of his previous ones. The action follows Philip Firmin, son of Dr. Brand Firmin and of Lord Ringwood's wealthy niece, who has been left a fortune at the death of his mother. The History of Pendennis. Complete in two volumes. With ninety-three illustrations to volume one and eight-nine illustrations to volume two.
