A lovely six volume set of later reprints of classic novels by Henry Fielding.

Fielding was an English writer and judge known for the use of humour and satire in his works, and along with Samuel Richardson, is seen as the founder of the traditional English novel.

His most notable novel, The History of Tom Jones, was first published in 1749, and is a comical Bildungsroman argued by Samuel Taylor Coleridge as one of the three most perfect plots ever planned.

With portraits and illustrations by George Cruikshank. Volume I has a frontispiece portrait of the author, and 4 plates. Volume II has a frontispiece, and 3 plates.

In a lovely half calf binding with marbled endpapers. Includes gilt to top edge. Bound by Bickers & Son, London. 





Condition

In half calf binding. Externally, excellent. Odd small, faint mark to boards, and mark to spine of Jonathan Wild. Book plate to front paste down of all volumes. Binder's stamp to rear of front free endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are clean and bright with occasional very light spotting.
