Leather Binding

With a frontispiece. A historical novel beginning in Bideford in North Devon during the reign of Elizabeth I. The novel follows the adventures of Amyas Leigh, an unruly child who as a young man follows Francis Drake to sea. Written by Charles Kingsley, a broad church priest of the Church of England, a university professor, social reformer, historian, novelist and poet. He is particularly associated with Christian socialism, the working men's college, and forming labour cooperatives.

Condition

Bound in full tree calf with gilt. Externally, smart with light rubbing to the extremities and minor wear to the board tips. Front hinge starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light spotting to the first and last few pages. Age toning to the endpapers with school prize bookplate to the front pastedown.
