Sir John Lubbock's Hundred Books series. A collection of essays contained in three books and over one hundred chapters of varying length. Originally written in Middle French, Montaigne's stated design in writing, publishing and revising the Essays was to record "some traits of my character and of my humours." Written by Michel Eyquem, commonly known as Michel de Montaigne, one of the most significant philosophers of the French Renaissance known for popularizing the essay as a literary genre. Translated by Giovanni Florio, known as John Florio, an English linguist, poet, writer, translator, lexicographer, and royal language tutor at the Court of James I. Publisher's advertisements to the rear, lacking pages 5 and 6.
Condition
In the original green cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Minor fading to the spine with the odd small mark to the cloth. Front hinge starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with age toning to the endpapers. A tear resulting in loss to the rear endpaper.
