Russian author Leo Tolstoy is considered a master of realistic fiction and one of the world's greatest novelists. Known for works such as 'War and Peace', his works oscillate between skepticism and dogmatism, exploring the human experience.
This novel was the last of Tolstoy's completed works, and was intended by the author as a panoramic view of Russia at the end of the 19th century from the highs and lows of society, exposing the injustice of man-made laws and the hypocrisy of the institutionalized church.
The novel tells a story of a nobleman's attempt to redeem the suffering of his youthful philandering inflicted on a peasant girl sent to prison in Siberia.
