Description
Illustrated, Leather Binding, Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding
Six volumes, lacking Silas Marner. Mixed editions, being a new edition and stereotyped edition. A collection of the novels of Mary Ann Evans, known by her pen name George Eliot, an English novelist, poet, journalist, translator, and one of the leading writers of the Victorian era. Like Charles Dickens and Thomas Hardy, she emerged from provincial England; most of her works are set there. Her works are known for their realism, psychological insight, sense of place and detailed depiction of the countryside. This set contains: Adam Bede, illustrated with a title vignette and six plates. Collated complete. The author's first novel, following the lives of four characters in the fictional community of Hayslop. The novel revolves around a love "rectangle" among the beautiful but self-absorbed Hetty Sorrel; Captain Arthur Donnithorne, the young squire who seduces her; Adam Bede, her unacknowledged suitor; and Dinah Morris, Hetty's cousin. Mill on the Floss, illustrated with a title vignette and six plates. Collated complete. Spanning a period of 10 to 15 years, the novel details the lives of Tom and Maggie Tulliver, siblings who grow up at Dorlcote Mill on the River Floss. Middlemarch, with a frontispiece. Set in Middlemarch, a fictional English Midlands town, in 1829 to 1832, it follows distinct, intersecting stories with many characters. The novel approaches significant historical events in a realist mode: the Reform Act 1832, early railways, and the accession of King William IV. Daniel Deronda, with a frontispiece. The last novel Eliot completed and the only one set in the Victorian society of her day. Beginning in September 1865, Daniel Deronda contains two main strains of plot, united by the title character. Felix Holt, illustrated with a title vignette and six plates. Collated complete. Dealing with political conflicts in a small English town at the time of the 1832 Reform Act. The plot centers on an election in which Harold Transome, a local landowner, runs for the "radical cause", contrary to his family's conservative tradition. Romola, with a frontispiece. A historical novel which takes place amidst actual historical events during the Italian Renaissance. A Florentine trader meets a shipwrecked stranger, who introduces himself as Tito Melema, a young Italianate-Greek scholar.
