Illustrated, Very Scarce

A booklet containing handwritten notes on the construction of the Severn Tunnel.

Written by Sir John Hawkshaw, the engineer of the tunnel.

These notes cover the major elements of the tunnels construction, starting from March 1873, cataloguing events until December 1886.

With a hand drawn plan entitled 'S. T. R. - Spring at 4m inchs as surv'd - 17th Octr 189' depicting a spring, possibly on the proposed construction route of the tunnel.

The Severn Tunnel was opened by Great Western Railway in 1886. They begun work on the tunnel, which measures at 7,008 metres long, in 1873, to link South Gloucestershire to Monmouthshire, and remained the longest underwater tunnel in the world for a century

Condition

A booklet held together with a split pin. Externally, very smart, with light edge wear and a few handling marks. Internally, firmly held. Pages are bright with the odd handling mark.
