llustrated throughout, with numerous vignettes and several plates designed by H Fitz-Cook and engraved by J C Whymper. Undated, dated using Copac. William Cowper was an English poet and hymndosit. He was one of the most popular poets of his time. He was one of the forerunners of Romantic poetry. The Diverting History of John Gilpin was a tale told to Cowper from his friend Lady Austen. Gilpin was said to be a wealthy draper from Cheapside of London. The poem tells how his wife and children become separated during a journey to the Bell Inn, Edmonton after he loses control of his horse and is carried to Ware, a town ten miles further.
Condition
In original green cloth binding with gilt stamping to front board. Externally, generally smart with minor bumping to the extremities. Small loss to cloth at the head and tail of spine due to rubbing. Front hinge is tender. Binder's stamp to rear pastedown, Edmonds and Remnants. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with spotting to the first and last few pages. Instances of light spots throughout.
