The first U.S edition. First published in the UK in 1871 in the Blackwood's Magazine and then as a pamphlet in the same year.
Illustrated with a monochrome frontispiece and illuminated letters.
This interesting future war novel was written anonymously by George Tomkyns Chesney, a British Army general and author, with this being one of the founding works for the 'invasion literature' genre. The story is told by a veteran in 1925 who is recounting the battle of Dorking, which is written to be a war that would happen a few years after the publication of the novella.

Condition
In the publisher's original cloth. Externally very smart with slight fading to the spine and extremities, slight wear to the extremities with very minimal closed tears to the head and tail of the spine. Hinges cracked with marks to the endpapers. Internally firmly bound with lightly age toned pages with the odd spot to the blanks and minor tidemarks to the head of the pages.
