1870 Severn Tunnel Railway Contracts
What Our Customers Say...
Description
First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, Very Scarce
The very scarce publication of the contract between the Great Western Railway Company and the contractor they hired to construct the Severn Railway Tunnel, a tunnel linking South Gloucestershire to Monmouthshire, built under the estuary of the River Severn.
This contract covers the 'construction of the works: also for maintaining the works constructed for a period of twelve months after the day of opening'.
The tunnel was constructed by Walker and GWR between 187 and 1886, having a length of 4 miles 628 yards (7,012 m).
This fascinating contract includes clauses on supervision of the works, on what is to be done in the case of bankruptcy, on payment, on completion timeframe, and on technical matters including concrete, road metalling, laying permanent way, side ditches, brickwork, masonry, and excavations.
