The very scarce expanded variant, undated and with the 'Industrial Publishing Co' imprint as called for. Only one copy held institutionally. A very rare variant of a scarce work, with an extra forty-three illustrations compared to the original edition, which was published in 1861 with fifty-three plates. 

Illustrated with ninety-five monochrome engraved plates, including three hand coloured plates, and most being folding plates. Collated, complete. 

An important engineering work, being an impressive collection of engravings from Gustavo Weissenborn, a talented mechanical engineer, featuring diagrams, plans, working drawings and illustrations depicting the construction of American locomotives. This impressive collection of plates provides insight into the engineering and mechanical construction of American locomotives of the nineteenth century, including the newest developments in locomotive engineering.

Lacking the original title page and index, collated against a matching copy held institutionally. 

Volume II (The plate volume) only.

Condition

Bound in half morocco. Externally, front joint weak, held by cords and rear starting, with rubbing and wear to the extremities, joints and raised bands. 'Bradford Public Library' stamps and labels to the endpapers. Internally, one plate disbound but present, the odd plate starting, and lacking original title and contents pages. Plates generally bright with minimal age toning, and the odd spot, with library stamps to the versos.
