A lavishly illustrated, leather bound edition of Robert Smith Surtees’ humorous novel, following the vulgar but good-natured sporting cockney grocer, Jorrocks.

Robert Smith Surtees (17 May 1805 – 16 March 1864) was an English editor, novelist and sporting writer, known most notably for his works featuring Jorrocks.

Wonderfully illustrated by John Leech.

Undated, dated using Jisc from a copy held at the University of Aberdeen Libraries.

Condition

In half calf leather binding, with cloth to the boards. Gilt title and decoration to the spine. Externally, smart. Some markings to the boards and tide mark to the centre left of the rear board. Light wear to the extremities, cloth slightly frayed to edge of front board. Marbled paper to pastedowns and recto of endpapers. Alan Thornton Whitney bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Some light spotting, predominantly to endpapers and pastedowns. Slight tears to title page tissue guard. Tidemark to the edge of title page. Small mark to title page and further four pages. Otherwise, pages are bright and clean.
