Composed in a garret in Bell Alley, Coleman Street, this work was influenced by James Thomson's poem The Seasons. It is a pastoral poem that invites readers into the life of a rural laborer, particularly focusing on the character of Giles, as he navigates the seasonal rhythms of farming and nature in Suffolk, England.
The success of The Farmer's Boy was remarkable, over twenty-five thousand copies being sold in two years.
Written by Robert Bloomfield, an English labouring-class poet, whose work is typically appreciated in the context of other self-educated writers, such as Stephen Duck, Mary Collier and John Clare.
