What Our Customers Say...

Description

Early Edition, Folding Maps, Illustrated, Leather Binding

Lacking title page. Dated from edition note to Environs of London which was from the eighth edition, published in 1819.

Bound across four volumes in half morocco.

With six folding maps, titled: Environs of London; Environs of Margate and Ramsgate; Isle of Wight; Environs of Cheltenham; Environs of Bath; Environs of Brighton. Standard collation for this work contains six folding maps and a larger folding map of England and Wales, which likely means this collection is lacking the large folding map of England and Wales.

Pencil note to front blank of volume one reads: 'It is presumed that the greater part of these illustrations were inserted by Her Grace the Duchess of Buckingham when at Avington Hampshire'.

Pagination runs as follows:

1-176 [columns]; 177-364 [columns]; 365-564 [columns] [1]; 565-912 [columns], 913-991 [1]pp.

Bound between each leaf are additional leaves, on which monochrome illustrations have been tipped. Each illustrated leaf contains a selection of monochrome images each relating to the area mentioned in the associated text leaf. Additional blank leaves imply the work was not completed, but nonetheless, the work is significantly extend with hundreds of additional images. The images themselves appear to come from a variety of additional works, but are all contemporary to the volume itself. Notable inclusions are additional images of Westminster Abbey, Tintern Abbey, Hatfield House and Hertford Castle.

Condition

In half morocco. Externally in excellent condition with just minor rubbing to boards and extremities, heavier to boards of volume one and three. Internally firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean with scattered spotting. Profusely extra illustrations with many additional leaves tipped in containing additional illustrations.
