Description

Leather Binding

Bound in half diced calf.

A collection of six plays taken from the 'British Theatre' series, published in 1808. Dated from copies of the work held at the University of Bristol library, as stated on Jisc.

Originally published in 25 volumes, this series was noted for carrying the critical remarks of Elizabeth Inchbald, a successful playwright, novelist and actress prevalent in the Georgian era. This series is hailed for being one of the major works of literary criticism of the time written by a female author.

In this sammelband there are six plays collected together from this series, although these plays did not originally appear in the same volume. This collection contains:

'Rule a Wife and Have a Wife. A Comedy' by Beaumont and Fletcher.
'A New Way to Pay Old Debts' by Philip Massinger.
'The Stranger' by Benjamin Thompson.
'Oroonoko' by Thomas Southern.
'The Dramatist, or Stop Him Who Can!' by Frederick Reynolds.
'The West Indian' by Richard Cumberland.

Each play is illustrated with a frontispiece.
