A very scarce first edition, originally issued in fifty parts and published in five volumes. Present here are volumes I and II only.

This is a popular moralising compendium of biographical narratives about notorious criminals in Britain, collecting sensational accounts of offences, trials, dying speeches and executions intended to warn readers against vice and criminality.

Illustrated with a frontispiece and two plates to volume I, with a further two plates detached and loosely inserted. Volume II illustrated with eleven plates bound to the rear, and with two further plates detached and loosely inserted.

Collated, lacking six plates to volume I, which have instead been bound to the rear of volume II. Lacking the frontispiece of volume II.

Volume II lacks pages 297 to 398.

The Calendar was both a quasi-official record and a piece of popular didactic literature.

Condition

Rebound in cloth, with endpapers renewed. Externally, excellent. Bumping to back strip head and tail. Front hinge of volume I, and hinges of volume II strained, with boards firmly held. Stamp to volume I front pastedown. Lacking free endpapers. Internally, generally firmly bound, but with two plates detached and loosely inserted to each volume. Pages significantly age toned, with the odd spot. Volume II lacking frontispiece, and lacking pages 297 to 398.
