What Our Customers Say...

Description

Leather Binding, Very Scarce

A collection of Latin sermons written by Gabriel Barletta.

Bound in full calf, lacking the front board.

Dated from an inscription "Lugdani 1524" to the front free endpaper.

Very scarce work.

Gabriel Barletta was a preacher active in the Neapolitan territory at Barletta during the late fifteenth century. Little is known about his life, with speculation suggesting he was a pupil of St. Antoninus and likely a Dominican. He was widely known for his skills as an orator, presenting sermons on the virtues and vices of life, receiving much praise from his contemporaries.

Widely celebrated for his preaching, Barletta often employed linguistic liberties not seen before, including the incorporation of jokes, common dialect and theatrics.

First appearing in print in 1497, Barletta's sermons held their popularity long after Barletta's death, being reprinted frequently ever since. His sermons provide us with an interesting insight into fifteenth-century society, particularly in Northern Italy.

This particular collection containing chapters on Thomas Aquinas, Peter and Paul, St. Michael, St. Andrew, pentecost, and much more.

Pages 1-116 are numbered on every second page, to the verso of each leaf. Signatures run from A to Q8.

Pencil inscription to the front blank suggesting this work belonged to H. R. H. the Duke of Sussex, with a bookplate to the front paste down stating so. However, without the front board and bookplate, this is not confirmed.

Condition

Bound in full calf. Externally, worn, lacking the front board. Rubbing to backstrip and rear board. Rear joint is cracked, with hinge strained but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Inscription to front endpaper and blank. Pages a little age toned with just the odd mark.
