What Our Customers Say...

Description

Colour Plates, Illustrated, Leather Binding

A very handsome copy bound in half calf and marbled pictorial boards. Decorated with full gilt page edges, and gilt tooling in between the raised calf bands to the spine.

An uncommon example of two volumes of this comical recounting of English history bound as one.

Volume one features a hand-coloured frontispiece, as issued, and 10 further hand-coloured plates of steel-engravings. Volume two also features 10 hand-coloured plates and a frontispiece, the frontispiece being misbound to face p.2 instead of p.1 as listed.
Both volumes collated, complete.

Both also feature frequent light hearted monochrome vignette illustrations, taken from engravings by John Leech, done on wood.

Condition

Bound in brown half calf. Externally, in lovely condition. Very infrequent and subtle marks to leather spine tips. Slight rubbing to spine. Very small sticker, 'J. Fellows 2003', to rear paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean, with occasional handling marks, and very infrequent age toning. Occasional marks to tissue guards. Mark to reverse of frontispiece. Closed tear to p.120
