The first English translation.

Bound in the publisher's original pictorial cloth.

Written by French art critic Charles Blanc, originally published in French in 1875.

Focussing on personal adornment, chapters include 'hair-dressing as a mark of character in men', use of enamel in jewellery, and the use of colour in clothing.

Wonderfully illustrated with vignettes throughout, including examples of a 'Unicorn Cap of the Middle Ages', 'Extreme Severity in the Head-Dress', a 'Dragonfly in Diamonds' and many more. Illustrations to page 181 and 183 have been brightly, hand coloured.

With thirty-two pages of publisher's advertisements to the rear, and a handwritten poem to the front endpaper.

Pencil inscription to front endpaper. Bookseller label to rear paste down. Front hinge is a touch strained, but holding firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean.
