From prominent author and screenwriter John Michael Crichton, best-known for the world-wide success Jurassic Park. Initially, Crichton wrote under the pseudonyms John Lange and Jeffrey Hudson. The Andromeda Strain was the first novel published under his own name.
The story follows a group of scientists as they work to find an antidote to a mysterious extraterrestial epidemic that has all but wiped out the inhabitants of a small Arizona town. Informed by Crichton's own medical training, this work paved the way for the techno-thriller genre which would grow in popularity in the following decades.
A film adaptation was released in 1971, directed by Robert Wise. Years later, in 2019, came the sequel to Crichton's book, The Andromeda Evolution. This was written by Daniel H. Wilson at the request of Crichton's widow and published posthumously under Crichton's name.
