In this work, Burnet offers an important explanation and defense of the Thirty Nine Articles of the Church of England, originally established in 1571 in an effort to define the beliefs of the Church of England. Burnet covers each article in order, offering both explanation and justification.

The work is notable for its sympathy towards traditional Arminian soteriology, something embraced by Burnet following his rejection of Calvinist thought.
