Decorative Binding, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

Eighteen volumes. 

Comprising a mixture of first editions (stated as such) and new undated impressions. These undated copies have been dated either from Jisc or the the years aligning with the changes in the publisher's address (hence the use of circa). 

Henty is best known for his historical and adventure novels, notably The Dragon and The Raven, For the Temple and In Freedom's Cause. Noted for his thorough research (and sometimes first-hand experience) in the events he set his stories within, Henty was the most popular Boy's author of his day, inspiring other other writers to attempt writing juvenile adventure stories in his style, including Herbert Strang, Percy F. Westerman and Henry Everett McNeil.

The Lion of St. Mark: A Tale of Venice (1889) - First edition, second impression. With a book by Harry Collingwood entitled The Missing Merchantman to p.12 of the catalogue of advertisements (Newbolt, 36.2). With a frontispiece and nine plates. 

The Cornet of Horse: A Tale of Marlborough’s Wars (1892) - Illustrated with a frontispiece, seven plates and five folding battle-field plans. 

St. Bartholomew’s Eve: A Tale of the Huguenot Wars (1894) - First edition (Newbolt 63.1) - With a frontispiece, eleven plates and a dual-spread map.

Condemned as a Nihilist: A Story of Escape from Siberia (c1894) - An early edition, retaining Edinburgh in the publisher’s address, which was not used after 1894 (Newbolt 58.2). First published in 1893. Illustrated with a frontispiece, seven plates and a dual-spread map of Russia.

Condition

In the publisher's decorative cloth bindings. Externally, smart, with only mild rubbing and bumping to the majority of the volumes. Fading to the spine of 'Incas'; hinges to this volume are also starting, but firm. The odd marks to the boards. Prize bookplate to the front pastedown of 'Nihilist'. Pages are bright and generally clean. With offsetting to the endpapers of several volumes and scattered spots concentrated to the first and last few leaves. Most notable instance to 'England's Aid', which has a few scattered spots throughout. Contemporary ink inscription to the front free endpaper of 'Khartoum', ffep of 'Saxon' and to the verso of the ffep of 'Through the Fray'.
