This is a six volume set of high-quality reprints and first edition facsimiles of Surtees's sporting novels with their original illustrations. These works were often witty and satirical, frequently poking fun at the social and sporting habits of the time. Surtees' characters, such as Mr. Jorrocks, emerged as enduring icons in the realm of sporting literature. All of these copies have been published by The R. S. Sutrees Society, and are first edition, thus.

This six volume set includes: 

Mr. Facey Romford's Hounds. 24 hand-colored steel engravings and numerous wood engravings by John Leech and Hablot K. Browne. This copy was published in 1983 by R.S. Surtees Society edition. First edition, thus.

Ask Mama; or, The Richest Commoner in England. This copy was published in 1983 by R.S. Surtees Society edition. First edition, thus. This copy features 13 color steel engravings and numerous woodcuts by John Leech, with the publisher’s ads to rear and endpapers.

Hadley Cross; or, Mr. Jorrock's Hunt. This edition was published in 1983 by the R.S. Surtees Society. First edition thus. This edition includes an introduction by Raymond Carr, 17 color steel engravings, and numerous wood engravings. This copy is notable for being described by Surtees as “the best thing I have ever written.”

"Plain or Ringlets?". This edition was published in 1986 by the R.S. Surtees Society. First edition, thus. This copy includes 13 hand-colored steel engravings and numerous woodcuts by John Leech. Final color engraving on p. 393 (not p. 385)

Young Tom Hall: His Heart-Aches and Horses. This edition was published in 1987 by the R.S. Surtees Society. First edition, thus. This volume includes a frontispiece of "Lord Heartycheer's Quiet Bye-day", and numerous additional plates by G. Denholm Armour.

Hawbuck Grange; or, The Sporting Adventures of Thomas Scott, Esq. This copy was published in 1988 by R.S. Surtees Society edition. First edition, thus. This work includes 8 steel engravings by Phiz, including color frontispiece and numerous in-text vignettes.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, excellent. Very slight rubbing and bumping to extremities and one or two very slight handling marks to the odd board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean.
