This memoir recounts the period following the publication of The Satanic Verses (1988), when Ayatollah Khomeini issued a fatwa sentencing him to death, forcing the author into years of police protection, secrecy, and displacement. Joseph Anton takes its title from the pseudonym Rushdie used while living under protection, combining the names of Conrad and Chekhov.
