Set in a rural community of post-apartheid South Africa, focuses on a timid man who moves from the city in the hope of writing poetry. What follows is a gripping drama which merges crime, thriller and parable into one work. The book was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writers Prize (Best Book Award, Africa Region) and Galgut would later win the 2021 booker prize for his novel The Promise.
