What Our Customers Say...
Description
Colour Plates, Illustrated, Pleasing Copy, Publishers' Original Binding, With Dustwrapper
Charles Sturt's travel journals issued by the Hakluyt Society, detailing the central Australian expedition of 1844.
Edited by Richard C. Davis.
Containing the narrative of the expedition that was led by Captain Charles Stuart to Central Australia. Sturt set out to find the inland sea lying in Australia's interior, certain he would stimulate the colony's pastoral economy. But they found no inland sea, and the party was trapped in an isolated waterhole and surrounded by hundreds of miles of parched land. As the rain finally came, the crew was able to start their difficult journey back to Adelaide.
Although the expedition was unsuccessful, Sturt's efforts revealed the nature of a very mysterious land, and interestingly, he established respectful and cooperative relations with the Aborigines encountered along the way.
With various illustrations throughout, both in colour and in black and white, as well as a map.
