The seventeenth novel in the popular Aubrey/Maturin series of naval tales, by British author Patrick O'Brian who is known for his well researched and highly detailed portrayal of early 19th century life. The narrative takes place during the Napoleonic Wars and the War of 1812.
In this novel, Aubrey and Maturin complete their circumnavigation of the globe that begun in The Thirteen Gun Salute. After a homecoming to England, Commodore Aubrey conducts a mission against slave ships in West Africa, and then he and Maturin are sent against Napoleon's army.
The story navigates from England, to Spain, to West Africa to the rocky west coast of Ireland.

In publisher's original cloth binding. In the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, excellent. Minor shelf wear to rear of spine. Dust wrapper is very smart. Slight shelf wear to extremities, most notably at the head and tail of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are clean and bright, with minor spotting towards the front of the work. Light spotting to fore edge.
