In the publisher's original cloth, with each of the five volumes containing a charming frontispiece. Volumes 1-4 display a monochrome portrait of the famous writer corresponding to his age, while volume 5, the appendices and index, contains an extract from 'James Boswell's dream'. Two photographic plates of selected letters in volumes 1-4. Collated complete.
Perhaps the most impactful lexicographer in English history, credited for creating the first English dictionary, Samuel Johnson's letters provide a precious documentation of his extraordinary life. The letters grant us a great understanding of Johnson's stylistic procedures and chains of thought, as well as providing a snapshot of life in eighteenth century England.
This Hyde edition is particularly special for highlighting new letters, as well as providing more accurate text and up-to-date annotations.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth in the original unclipped dust wrappers. Externally, excellent condition. Occasional dirt on endpapers. Small dirt mark on back board of volume I and front board of volume IV. Dust wrappers are fine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with the very rare spot of dirt.
