From acclaimed British author Dame Beryl Bainbridge, winner of the 2003 David Cohen Prize and two-time Whitbread winner for Injury Time in 1977 and Every Man for Himself in 1996. At her death in 2010, five of her books previously shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize were shortlisted again, nick-named the "Best of Beryl" prize, including An Awfully Big Adventure although the 1998 Master Georgie won overall.

Set in Liverpool in 1950, this text centres on a young theatre troupe during their Christmas run of Peter Pan and the social politics and entanglements that follow backstage. The book was adapted into a film in 1995, directed by Mike Newell and starring Alan Rickman, Hugh Grant and Georgina Cates.
