The first edition of this very scarce work, in the publisher's original unclipped dust wrapper.
Signed from the authors to American naval officer and aviator, aeronautical engineer, test pilot, and NASA astronaut Paul J. Weitz. Weitz was a member of the three-man crew who flew the first crewed Skylab mission, and was also commander of the maiden flight of the Space Shuttle Challenger.
Inscribed 'with sincere feelings of respect and good wishes, in memory of our warm moment and with high hopes for the future, from the authors' to the verso of the half title.
With a further inscription, in Russian, from Soviet cosmonaut Vladimir Vasiliyevich Kovalyonok to the title page, dated 13.02.1990, and addressed 'To Paul J. Weitz'.
Soviet cosmonaut Kovalyonok flew the long-endurance mission EO-2, which set a new record of 139 days in space.
Inscribed to the half title 'from my library Paul Weitz', with Weitz's blind stamp to the title page tail.
Illustrated throughout with monochrome and colour photographs, tables, and charts.
This work summarises the results of visual and instrumental studies of the Earth gathered from Salyut, the Soviet Union's first space station program, which ran from 1971 to 1986.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding, with unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, fine. Dust wrapper back strip a touch age toned, with small closed tears to back strip head and tail, and minor loss to tail of fold of front flyleaf. Light handling marks to fore edge of rear wrap. Internally, firmly bound. Inscription to half title, verso of half title, and title page. Blind stamp to title page tail. Pages exceptionally clean and bright.
