Illustrated beautifully in colour throughout.
Including a loosely inserted folding table 'easy-to-read handbook of difficult-to-read season words'.
A saijiki is a comprehensive and detailed list of seasonal words (kigo) used in haikus. Modern saijiki's are typically divided into the four seasons and the New Year, with each section then being divided into categories such as the season, the heavens, the earth, humanity, observances, animals, and plants.
Each kigo, or 'seasonal word', is described in detail, noting their origin and histories in the tradition, as well as including some examples of haiku that include that kigo.
This fully colour illustrated saijiki still sets the standard for similar works.
Edited by Aki Sakurako Suwon, Shuson Kato, and Kenkichi Yamamoto. Kato was a greatly influential poet in the field of modern haiku. Yamamoto was an influential literary critic, and was the senior editor of this work.
