This edition presents a first-hand account of the latter stages of the Peninsular War, the clash of allied British, Portuguese, and Spanish forces against the French in the Western Pyrenees and south-west France during 1813–1814.
Captain Robert Batty (1789–1848) was educated at Caius College Cambridge, and was commissioned as an Ensign in the 1st regiment of Foot Guards in 1813, before being placed as a Lieutenant-Colonel in 1828, participating in key engagements such as the sieges of San Sebastián, the battles of the Nive, Orthes, Bayonne, and Toulouse, and was wounded at Waterloo. He was also a skilled artist, illustrating the plates and fold-out map in this edition.
Condition
In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart. Some binding glue apparent to edge of font grey cloth board, onto red quarter cloth. Very slight discolouration to rear board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean.
