A detailed and comprehensive study of the operas and ballets of Richard Georg Strauss, a German composer and conductor best known for his tone poems and operas. Along with Gustav Mahler, he represents the late flowering of German Romanticism. With chapters on the staging and artistry of each individual opera, including: Elektra, Der Rosenkavalier, Ariadne auf Naxos, Die ägyptische Helena, Arabella, Daphne, Friedenstag, Die Liebe der Danae, and more. Written by Rudolf Hartmann, a German opera director considered one of the most important directors of the twentieth century.

In the original full cloth binding. Externally, excellent. Original price-clipped dust wrapper is also excellent. With the original card slip case which remains in very smart condition with minor wear to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout. With a contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper.
